Many patients want to know what a bridge is and how it compares to an implant. This is an excellent question. Both options are effective for replacing a missing tooth, but they function differently and have unique advantages.

A bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by anchoring it to the adjacent teeth. It involves preparing the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap by reducing them to hold the bridge, which consists of three connected crowns. While a bridge is a good solution, it has some limitations. Preparing the supporting teeth increases the risk of needing a root canal on those teeth, with studies showing a 25 to 27% chance over time. Additionally, the long-term health of the supporting teeth can impact the durability of the bridge.

In contrast, an implant is a standalone solution that does not involve the neighboring teeth. A mini implant, for example, can be placed in the gap to support a single tooth. This preserves the surrounding teeth and reduces the risk of future complications. Implants also integrate with the bone, providing a secure and long-lasting foundation for the replacement tooth.

While we often recommend implants for their durability and minimal impact on neighboring teeth, bridges remain a viable option for certain cases, especially when an implant is not feasible due to health or anatomical reasons. Both options result in a permanent, functional restoration that allows you to chew and enjoy your favorite foods.

We tailor our recommendations to each patient’s needs, ensuring the solution chosen provides the best balance of functionality, aesthetics, and long-term success.
