Patients often ask about the differences between regular implants and mini implants and why one might choose one over the other. The key distinction lies in their size and placement process.

Mini implants are defined as any implant with a diameter of 2.9 millimeters or smaller, while conventional implants are larger. Both have their uses, but mini implants are preferred in many cases due to their simplicity and efficiency.

Conventional implants require drilling a hole into the bone, placing the implant, and allowing it to heal for 4 to 9 months, depending on individual health factors. This healing time ensures the implant integrates fully with the bone before any restoration is added.

Mini implants, on the other hand, often allow same-day placement without the need for extensive drilling. Within a week, a prosthesis, such as a denture or single tooth, can typically be attached, enabling patients to resume normal activities like chewing immediately. Mini implants are also a single-piece design, which simplifies the procedure and is gentler on the surrounding gum tissue.

While we do place both types of implants, mini implants are often favored for their convenience, faster recovery time, and effectiveness in providing immediate function for patients.
